India Population

Country occupies 2.4% of world's land that supports over 15 percent of world's population and almost 40 percent of population is younger than 15 years. 70 percent of people live in the villages, remainder in cities and towns. Over its history, country has been invaded from Iranian plateau, Arabia, central Asia, Afghanistan and West. Culture and people of country absorbed and then changed to these influences to produce remarkable cultural and racial synthesis. Caste, Religion and languages are also determinants of political and social organization in the country today. Caste system of country reflects the Indian occupation and defined religiously. There are 4 broad categories of castes in country including category of the outcastes that is called "untouchables". In year 1991, census count gave India total population of 846,302,688, that estimates population of country widely varied.

 

According to population Division of United Nations and social affairs, population of country had reached already 866 million in year 1991. Population division projected about 896.5 million by the year 1993 with 1.9 percent of annual growth rate. United States Bureau of Census, assuming population growth rate at 1.8 percent that put population of country in year 1995 at 936,545,814. This higher projection merit attention had estimated figure of 844 million for year 1991when preparing five year English Plan.

 

Country accounts for 2.4 percent of world's landmass and is home to 16 percent of global population. Magnitude of annual increase in the population can also be seen in fact that country adds almost total population of Sri Lanka and Australia every year.

 

India has been in midst of demographic transition, at beginning of century, periodic epidemics, endemic disease and famines kept death rate that was high enough to balance the high rate. Upward population in country began in 1920s was reflected in the internal growth increments. Density of Indian population has risen concomitantly with massive increase in the population.
